The hippo and the turtle.....a true story!

NAIROBI (AFP) - A baby hippopotamus that survived the tsunami waves
on the Kenyan coast has formed a strong bond with a giant male century-old
tortoise, in an animal facility in the port city of Mombassa, officials
said.

The hippopotamus, nicknamed Owen and weighing about 300 kilograms
(650 pounds), was swept down Sabaki River into the Indian Ocean, then
forced back to shore when tsunami waves struck the Kenyan coast on December
26, before wildlife rangers rescued him.

"It is incredible. A-less-than-a-year-old hippo has adopted a male
tortoise, about a century old, and the tortoise seems to be very happy with
being a 'mother'," ecologist Paula Kahumbu, who is in charge of Lafarge
Park, told AFP.

"After it was swept and lost its mother, the hippo was traumatized.
It had to look for something to be a surrogate mother. Fortunately, it
landed on the tortoise and established a strong bond. They swim, eat and
sleep together," the ecologist added. "The hippo follows the tortoise
exactly the way it follows its mother. If somebody approaches the tortoise,
the hippo becomes aggressive, as if protecting its biological mother,"
Kahumbu added.

"The hippo is a young baby, he was left at a very tender age and by
nature, hippos are social animals that like to stay with their mothers for
four years," he explained.

My brother "B" who is a POLI-SCI major AND a Republican...YES...A REPUBLICAN...and I have MANY healthy debates and fun ones at that. I agree with MANY Republican views like on the subject of Welfare, but disagree with many others. So "B" and I have some great Arguments, and i learn something from hime every time. Of course he never insults my views during the debates...and I never insult his. We merly disagree on them.
We both have a problem with the narrowminded. Narrowmindedness is the reason for the ignorant to CONTINUE to stay ignorant, and it is generally a high dose of EGO that perpetuates it.
You see, he is a fine representation of his political party. he makes great points without having to bash others by calling them "Not true Americans". Become informed before you open your pie-hole, and stop embarassing yourself and others.

I decided to re-print the comment that I think many missed on the Funeral post. It was the last one. It was from my freind "C" who was the Aunt, and the one who adopted "M" the little girl of the woman who killed herself.

If you Bloggers don't think that you make a difference, then think again.

"Hello, everyone. I am the aunt of the little girl and I just want to thank you for all the thoughts you have shared. I have read them over and over again and they ease my soul as I try to recover from this unbelievably difficult situation.

Today I finally had time to catch up to myself after the funeral and I realized I miss my niece's mom terribly. The funeral was so beautiful. I got to hear a side of her her mom I regret I barely got to see, as I was the one chosen to set the boundaries and highlight right from wrong for her daughter's sake. I feel I know her better in death than in life.

I always knew it could be a matter of life and death for her and it made every decision twice as hard to make. I take comfort in the fact that I had many people backing my decisions as I made them. I do feel peace knowing I never once took it lightly. I only spoke to her in anger once, and it is easier to handle knowing, even when I had to set boundaries, I was as kind as I possibly could be.

Even knowing that, I will tell you three things that have changed forever with me.

First, life is really quite simple.... there is a God, he loves us and wants to help us whether we believe in him or not. If we don't want him to help us, he can't and we wind up in pain or dead, as with my niece's mom. It is our choice.

Second, I have no time for petty or serious resentments. They have nothing to do with God's purpose, which is saving us from ourselves and the world(evil)and using us to save others; and essentially those resentments have everything to do with self(and all that implies) and are of no use what so ever.

Third, I pray for everyone now without hesitation, because I know the first two things to be undisputalby true. Good luck to all of you on your journey and may God be with you always. If I have helped anyone by my story, I count all the pain worthwhile. Please use this story to help others"

The Dating GAME-Hate the players? Maybe you should just hate the game....

Its been my experience that guys simply don't understand what women have to go through on the internet thing. Anyone ever hear of safety?
Its been my experience that the following can be true-
Women like to:

1) See if the guy is compatible by having conversations first. This is also a means of getting a "gut feeling' on a guy to see if he is a pyscho killer, or a liar. I understand it, and its pretty logical if you look at it from the womans point of view.


2) Some women are really not sure if they want to date or not. some are merely "testing the waters". Some internet sites "fool you" into joining their dating sites through the use of "personality tests", and before you know it, you have a profile on it.
I have run across alot of "tire kickers", and its not necessarily a bad thing. Men just need to understand that women are not wired the same as guys are. D-UHHHHHHHH!


3) Women get INNUNDATED with emails and IM's from SEX FIENDS and MARRIED MEN as well as "normal guys", whatever THAT is.
If you were in their shoes, how would you feel as far as trusting? One should walk a mile in the others shoes before bitching-take that last sentence to heart men!


NOW Most of us guys want to:
1) Meet you as soon as possible, see if their are sparks THEN investigate-Its a cut to the chase thing, and let me tell you why:

A little tale
About month ago, I spent 3 months (prior) talking to a lady whom I got to like alot as far as conversation. We finally met, and

POOF-No chemistry whatsoever. Now this gal is really cool, but I have a busy life and haven't really followed up with her on a freindship level. Part of me wishes we would have met sooner, because there is only so much yakking time I have, BUT I HAVE to respect and be understanding of the above reasons why women are CAREFUL. They have reasons both for safety sake, and emotional too.

Some have been hurt bad by asshole men, and are just being careful. Can you blame them? I MARVEL at the stories of abuse and mindgames some of these women have been put through.

The BOTTOM LINE IS:
Guys, if you don't have patience, and you also have a narrow expectation on dating, then cheap internet dating isn't for you. maybe you need to upgrade to a "premium service". I hear the success numbers are higher, but the cost is steep!

I have met about 20 women on the dating thing this summer, and I have made 5 non-love connection friends whom I respect and like very much.

If you aren't willing to be patient, then get a mail order bride from a foreign country, and shut the hell up! (No offense Tovarish!)

Today is the funeral for "M"'s Mom. I have decided to attend to help support the family. Its also a good reminder (to me) of the damage addiction/selfish choices can cause.

If an addict/alcoholic thinks that they are hurting only themselves, all they need to do is attnd one of these funerals for one who has succumbed to their illness to see the pain that it causes. The hurt runs deep, and it never truly goes away.

I can only hope that (over time) it becomes bearable for the ones left behind.

If you care to, please say a prayer for the family. They could use it!

On a MUCH lighter Note....

Alcohol contributes to 100,000 deaths annually, making it the third leading cause of preventable mortality in the United States after tobacco and diet/activity patterns.

Although there are fewer deaths from alcohol related causes than from cancer or heart disease, alcohol related deaths tend to occur at much younger ages.

I have a friend (C) who talks to me on a regular basis, and the last few months the subject has been about alcoholism. "C" and her husband have recently decided to take custody of a little girl "M".

"M's" biological parents have been dealing with alcohol and drug addiction, and have not been able to adequately take care of their daughter.

This is a subject dear to me as I also have had my own encounters with addiction, and am very familier with dealing with it from firsthand experience.

"Tough Love" is called that for a reason. Addicts or Alcoholics put people in a position to make hard decisions because they are too selfish or self-centered and caught up in their own BS. to do what normal people do and live life on lifes terms. They can't be bothered with that. They leave these decisions to others either by default or design.

Some of them have to lose everything. I was one of those. I didn't "Clean up my act" until i was pretty much destitute. The greatest gift I ever received was the "Tough Love' given to me by my parents and friends. I am a blessed man.

It was a terrible thing for them to have to do. I never understood it until I stood at the other side giving advice to my friend "C". She was facing hard decisions, and in the face of adverse conditions, she was tough enough to do what she had to do.

I was just informed today "M's" Biological mother was found dead in her apartment. She was young-in her late 30's I believe. She had a failing liver and hepatitus B. We still don't know if it was suicide.

My friend was beside herself, and so was I. Noone wanted this to happen. We all wanted M's Mom to get better.

Death is the ultimate choice.

Despite myself, I wonder did i give the right advice? I know I did. It was advice that had not come from me, but from those who are much more experienced and have dealt with these issues 50 years befoe I was born. It's the same principles that had saved my life as well. Its a human thing to second guess. Alcohol and drug addiction is a CHOICE. Suicide is a CHOICE. There is help OUT THERE, and even the most HOPELESS cases can get WELL if they want it bad enough.




I hope I never am the cause of (this kind of) pain in others again.

Kid convinces me to go blading-Sore as hell today~

Which is good-It was really fun. My friend "The Kid" from the reverie cafe FINALLY convinced me to go blading yesterday, and I had a BLAST! I am planning on going at least 2-3 times a week now to supplement my gym bouts. I have been in a funk for 2 weeks which is coincindently how long I have NOT bicycling, and this will fill up my exersise program nicely!

Time to be serious-I personally KNOW 3 couples who are having this go on in their lives. It was only a "light slap", but I have to believe thats how the nightmares start.



It is NEVER ACCEPTABLE FOR ABUSE TO OCCUR AND THERE IS NO SITUATION THAT EVER JUSTIFIES IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Shocking? abuse happens people...And it happens more than you know. I have been abused in my lifetime, and I have seen it inflicted on those I care about. It is NEVER NEVER NEVER acceptable.

If you are ABUSED, get HELP! Don't let the abuser get away with it! The law is on your side. if you DO let the abuser continue to abuse, then you are SICK, and you need HELP TOO. Normal people do NOT let others ABUSE THEM. Its OK to ask for help! YOU ARE NOT WORTHLESS...YOU ARE WORTHY OF GETTING HELP!!

If you are AN ABUSER-GET HELP!!! Get COUNSELING!! You are SICK! If you don't, know that youre behavior will NOT be tolerated, and if good people witness it, we WILL HAVE YOU ARRESTED! We will NOT STAND BY WHILE YOU BEAT ON YOUR VICTIM!!!

I am sick to death of the fact in our society with ALL THE INFORMATION and DEMONIZATION of ABUSE that it still is an option for some people. It is SICK, and it should make US SICK and want to take action!

Yeah its crazy stuff over in France. and its always a few hooligans who start it all. Is Racism to blame? Or is it a bunch of teenagers with too much time on their hands that want to cause a ruckus? The whole thing started because some little shitheads electricuted themselves while hiding from the cops. What were they running for? Any thoughts?

Review of Star Wars-Revenge of the Sith on DVD

Why now? Probably because I never really gave the movie a fair shake. I mean I was at the frigging premiere with all the geeks and nerds...I mean I guess when I was younger, I would have LOVED all the pomp and circumstance, but I just saw it as a bunch of idiots who were keeping me from getting a good seat.

I was disappointed at the premiere, but then again, it was the most DEPRESSING AND DARK movies of the saga, and it was MEANT TO BE. I mean its about BETRAYAL. Its about the death of good killed by evil. Its about a character that had lots of potential lost to FEAR.

I liked the way that Lucas fleshed out the characters in this movie. I liked the manipulation of the Emperor using Anakins FEAR of losing his loved ones. I mean its obvious to us, but Ian McDiarmid actor and director, and joint Artistic Director of the highly acclaimed Almeida Theatre in Islington, north London, was a genius and was the BEST choice for Emperor Palpatine. He was over the top when it called for it, and subtle when he needed to be. It was especially amazing the way his character did the Schizophrenic change betwixt the laid back chancellor to the energized crazed maniacal Sith Lord.

I also liked the flashes of evil, and the way Annakins character would justify all the crimes committed (by him) up to the time of the final duel between Annakin and Obi Wan Kenobi. It was his FEAR that was (ultimately) his undoing. The fear of loss...The fear of not having what he wanted. Hence the reason for the Jedi not allowing close relationships (marriage) in the order.

Obi Wans Character artfully played again by Ewan McGregor was again well done. McGregor did the character justice to the end. It was heartwrenching to see his pain at having to cut down his friend. Maybe this is the reason why I came away from the movie feeling somewhat empty. That's was the point. You don't FEEL GOOD about the movie. And that is the whole intent. You SHOULD feel bad. Lucas made this movie well ultimately because you CARE about the players, or you wouldn't feel bad at the end. It would be more like apathy.

The ONLY character I had a problem with is Padme played by Natalie Portman. It was sad to see her degenerate into a sobbing helpless shell of her former self, but then here again, its Lucas whole mission is to show a sort of pathetic hopelessness. In this, he did his job well.

All in all, given the circumstances of the saga, I give the movie a B+. The effects were outstanding, the storyline ran smoothly, and it depressed the hell out of me.
